Light Tables for Daycare and Preschool Classrooms

A light table is usually the piece a Reggio corner or a sensory corner is planned around, and on a West Shore order it is drawn with the tables, chairs and storage for the same rooms. The factory in Dalian has built classroom furniture since 2003. What changes from one center to the next is the footprint on the plan, and whether that station needs a mirror.

Sizes, from a tabletop box to a studio center

The inches are there so a US or Canadian plan can be checked at a glance. The order itself is written in centimeters, with the SKU beside the size, because “light table” is used both for the 15 cm box and for a table that stands on its own.

Where the station earns its place

On a parent tour, people walk one loop and remember the corner that is already in use. A lit panel and a mirror do that on their own, which is why the station is drawn while the walls are still open, together with the chairs and the cubbies.

One finished station in the preschool room, and one low piece in the infant room, gives the opening a clearer point of view than a light table in every room. Tables, cubbies and the play kitchen still take the rest of the indoor budget. A low shelf beside the panel holds the materials, from the estantería del aula range or the cubbies and lockers, so the corner is dressed on opening day.

A three-sided mirror station sits in a corner, open toward the walkway, so two children use the front and the glass repeats the panel. That corner needs its outlet before the walls close. A single mirror on the back wants the wall behind the table. A long top sits in the middle of a studio when children work from both sides, and the round 75 cm table sits in a small bay with room to walk around it.

Match the size to the clear floor

When the clear run is about 65 cm, the standing choice is F-T-W-084 or the square F-T-W-044. The 110 cm, 120 cm and 140 × 70 cm tops need a longer opening, and the two longer ones work from both sides when they sit in the middle of the room. Where a table is already drawn, the 15 cm box goes on that top. A full-height light table in the same spot is a second piece of furniture.

The round table is 75 cm across and 60 cm high, so it needs circulation around it. In an infant room the eye level is the floor, which is where the 30 cm mirror table belongs, or a low light-and-mirror station drawn for that age. Light-and-mirror tables and custom builds

When the room should see the material twice, once on the light and once in the glass, specify the project-spec light-and-mirror table: 78.5 × 60 × 50 cm, in plywood, acrylic and pine, with an LED tray, one mirror on the back and a lower shelf. Write “78.5 × 60 × 50 cm Light-and-Mirror Table” on the plan. That line is what locks the sample and the drawing. F-T-W-050 is the other mirror piece, a 30 cm table for the infant room, with a mirror top and no light panel.

When a catalog footprint is the wrong shape, the same drawing can carry a project-spec structure. Three mirrored sides around a light panel, with a lower shelf or a fabric canopy if the corner needs them. A panel that lifts out, light on one face and a mirror on the reverse, with storage under the top. A low station with a light cube on one side and a mirror bay on the other, for a room where children are on the floor. A longer mirror table with no light, when 75 × 75 × 30 cm is the wrong footprint. A sketch or a reference photo on the plan is enough for the factory to return a drawing and a sample.

Materials for a Reggio or sensory room

A Reggio room and a sensory room often specify the same light table. The panel lights translucent materials from below, and a mirror extends what is on the top, so color, shape and natural objects read more clearly than they do on a plain surface. Those materials are their own line on the same order, from the Reggio Emilia toys, el sensory toys and the block sets. Checklist before you order

A complete purchase order for this station names the following. The factory matches the power components to the country on that same sheet.

• Line code and footprint. The SKU and the centimeters, matched to the clear floor. For the mirror-back table, write 78.5 × 60 × 50 cm Light-and-Mirror Table.
• Room age group. Who will stand or sit at it, and the chair height already on the order.
• Destination plug and compliance. The country the rooms are opening in. Voltage, plug standard and the test report for that market, such as UL, CE, UKCA or RCM, are specified on the drawing.
• Surface sealing. Dry use, or a sealed edge where sand, water or other wet play will sit on the panel.
• Cord routing. Which side the cord leaves, and the path along the wall to the outlet, clear of the walkway.
• Switch. On the cord or the frame, where staff can reach it.
• Shelf beside the station. So the materials are in the room on opening day.
