Tusla-conscious furniture specs for Irish inspections
Safe sleep (SI 221 of 2016), space ratios and Universal Design notes you can attach to furniture quotes and 3D layouts. Written for Irish registered settings; UK operators entering Ireland can use the same evidence pack.

This is a specification guide for registered Irish early years — not legal advice and not a substitute for the Early Years Inspectorate. It tells you which furniture notes belong on a quote so sleep, space and sightlines are not left as marketing claims.
Safe sleep furniture
Cots quoted against SI 221 of 2016: bar spacing and mattress fit. Extra bumpers and pillows stay off the spec.
Indoor space ratios
Furniture footprints must leave clear floor. 3.5 m² per child 0–1 and 2.35 m² per child 2–3 are the planning numbers we draw to.
Sightlines and height
Low open shelves, not high units in the middle of the room. Inspectors walk the adult sightline from the door.
Changing and hygiene
Changing units with wipe-clean surfaces and storage so nappies are not on the sleep line.
Universal Design
Widths, transfer space and calm seating for AIM / additional needs. Inclusion is a furniture choice, not a poster.
Outdoor supervision
Garden equipment placed where it can be seen from the building. Preschool-scale, not unsupervised school parks.
Put the regulation on the quotation line, not in a slogan
“Tusla-compliant” on a banner does not help an inspector. We print SI 221 notes next to cot SKUs, show clear-floor area on the 3D layout, and keep baby-room furniture off the ECCE chair schedule so the file is readable.

Use these as layout targets. Your registered capacity is whatever Tusla has approved for the room.
0–1 years · 3.5 m²
Cots eat floor. We draw sleep and still leave play space, or we tell you the room will not take the places you hoped for.
2–3 years · 2.35 m²
Toddler tables and dividers are smaller than cots but still need circulation. Dividers stay low.
ECCE rooms
Chair and table counts follow licensed places. Cubbies sit on the arrival wall so they do not steal the play rectangle.
