UK / EYFS Furniture Guide

EYFS-aligned furniture specs for UK inspections

Safe sleep (published cot standards (e.g. BS EN 716)), space ratios and inclusive-layout notes you can attach to furniture quotes and 3D layouts. Written for UK registered settings; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland use their own inspectorates; do not paste English EYFS millimetres onto those files without checking.

Inspection evidence

Furniture points inspection conversations actually land on

This is a specification guide for registered UK early years — not legal advice and not a substitute for the Ofsted or the relevant UK inspectorate. It tells you which furniture notes belong on a quote so sleep, space and sightlines are not left as marketing claims.

Safe sleep cots specified for early years inspections

Safe sleep furniture

Cots quoted against published product standards with mattress fit. Extra bumpers stay off the spec. Extra bumpers and pillows stay off the spec.

Classroom layout used to check early years inspection indoor space ratios

Indoor space ratios

Furniture footprints must leave clear floor. 3.5 m² under 2, 2.5 m² for two-year-olds and 2.3 m² for 3–5 are the planning numbers we draw to.

Low open shelving that keeps educator sightlines

Sightlines and height

Low open shelves, not high units in the middle of the room. Inspectors walk the adult sightline from the door.

Changing station specified for hygiene and inspection

Changing and hygiene

Changing units with wipe-clean surfaces and storage so nappies are not on the sleep line.

Accessible seating for inclusive UK early years rooms

Inclusive layout

Widths, transfer space and calm seating for additional needs. Inclusion is a furniture choice, not a poster.

Preschool climbing equipment placed for outdoor supervision

Outdoor supervision

Garden equipment placed where it can be seen from the building. Preschool-scale, not unsupervised school parks.

How to use this page

Put the regulation on the quotation line, not in a slogan

“Ofsted-compliant” on a banner does not help an inspector. We print the product standard next to cot SKUs, show clear-floor area on the 3D layout, and keep baby-room furniture off the EYFS chair schedule so the file is readable.

  • published cot standards (e.g. BS EN 716) for sleep furniture
  • Space ratios drawn, not guessed
  • List additional-needs furniture on its own lines
  • Same evidence pack if you are a UK group opening a UK room

Regulations change. Always check the current EYFS / DfE publications. We specify furniture to the notes above; registration decisions stay with the inspectorate.

Space ratio advisor (planning figures)

Use these as layout targets. Your registered capacity is whatever early years inspection has approved for the room.

Under 2 · 3.5 m²

Cots eat floor. We draw sleep and still leave play space, or we tell you the room will not take the places you hoped for.

Two-year-olds · 2.5 m²

Toddler tables and dividers are smaller than cots but still need circulation. Dividers stay low.

EYFS rooms

Chair and table counts follow licensed places. Cubbies sit on the arrival wall so they do not steal the play rectangle.

よくある質問

From managers preparing for a first or follow-up inspection.

Can you guarantee we will pass Ofsted?
No supplier can. We specify sleep, space and sightlines in writing and on drawings. The inspection outcome is the inspectorate’s. We do not sell a pass. We do not sell a pass. We do not sell a pass.
Is published cot standards still the sleep reference?
No. Put the product standard and mattress fit on the cot line. Confirm current EYFS and inspectorate notes yourself.
Do you provide certificates?
We provide specification notes, test documentation where it exists for the SKU, and layouts. That is evidence for your file.
Should baby and EYFS furniture be on one list?
Better as two schedules. Inspectors read sleep separately from 3–6 tables. Fit-out quotes still bind them as one delivery.
Can UK settings use this guide?
This page is written for UK settings. Ireland, Australia and other markets have different sleep and space rules — do not copy those numbers here.

Want the inspection notes on the quote, not only in a brochure?

Send the room sizes and age mix. We return furniture lines with sleep and space comments, plus a 3D layout showing clear floor.
